The Athens Cultural Affairs Commission announced its 2019 Arts In Community grant recipients earlier this year: Classic City on Wax Vol 1, Athens Rising, and LatinxFest.
Classic City on Wax: Vol 1 is a vinyl compilation with an all-star line-up of Athens-based hip-hop artists.
This project will be Athens, Georgia’s first vinyl compilation focusing exclusively on Athens hip-hop. This in no way includes everyone that is a part of the current wave, but simply a snapshot of the great music that is coming out of the Classic City. This is just the first volume in what will hopefully be an annual series. This promotional project will help to highlight and elevate the profile of the Athens hip-hop scene beyond our local community.
The Classic City on Wax Vol 1 will feature artists LG, Motorhead 2X, Son Zoo, LB, Squalle, Kxng Blanco, Ishues, Linqua Franqa ft. Wesdaruler, DK, Cassie Chantel, THE YOD and Caulfield. All production is being done locally, being mixed and mastered by Jesse Mangum at The Glow Recording Studio and vinyl being pressed at Kindercore Vinyl.
Two free screenings of the docu-series, Athens Rising (including panel discussions) happened in early August. LatinxFest was in September.
