Promoting creativity in unexpected places, Art Decko is a public art project featuring nine large-scale, 4’x8’ paintings commissioned to decorate the College Avenue Parking Deck in downtown Athens. The project seeks to introduce visitors to several of the talented artists who call Athens home, all while beautifying a utilitarian space. Creature Comforts will host an exhibition showcasing the paintings during the month of April, and the artwork will be permanent installed at the deck this May.

Launched over a decade ago by the Athens Area Arts Council, the first installment of Art Decko featured panels designed by art classes at various local elementary, middle and high schools. The material lifespan of the original panels ended, creating a unique opportunity to bring in new and exciting pieces by professional artists. From over 100 proposal submissions, the following artists were selected for Art Decko: Ruth Allen, Ashley Anderson, Hannah Betzel, Jared Brown, Dorian Edwards, Will Eskridge, Jeremy Kiran Fernandes, Jeanne Whatley and Jacob Wenzka.

A special celebration at Creature Comforts will be held on Sunday, Apr. 8 from 1–6 p.m. Visitors can peruse a small artists market featuring original works by Art Decko artists while listening to performances by Elf Power, Forbidden Waves and Jeremy Kiran Fernandes. Bands will play at the top of the hour, starting at 2:15 p.m. Creature Comforts is located at 271 W. Hancock Ave., and the showcase is free to attend and open to all ages.

Art Decko was organized by the AAAC in partnership with the Athens Cultural Affairs Commission, the Athens Downtown Development Authority and Lyndon House Arts Center
